Whether you are retiring to Spain, looking for a holiday home by the beach or a property investment opportunity, Torrevieja quite simply has it all.
Located on Spain’s sunny Costa Blanca just a 40-minute drive south of Alicante Airport, Torrevieja is recognised as one of the healthiest places to live in the world by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the best place to buy property in Spain by British television show A Place in the Sun, among many other accolades.
It is one of the fastest growing towns in Spain and is a popular with Spaniards and foreigners alike. In fact, the split is almost 50/50 nowadays, making Torrevieja a real melting pot of nationalities from all five continents.
So, what is it about Torrevieja that has everyone so excited and why should you consider buying a property in Torrevieja? Let’s take a quick look at what the city has to offer.
Idyllically set between the Mediterranean Sea and two stunning salt lakes that are vibrant green and pink in colour, Torrevieja has a micro climate that boasts 320 days of sunshine a year and an average annual temperature of over 18°C.
And with six blue flag beaches, three of which are walking distance from the city centre, Torrevieja should definitely be on the radar of anyone who enjoys a day on the sand. This by itself makes Torrevieja a fantastic place to either retire or to spend a few months a year on holiday, but Torrevieja offers a lot more than just an amazing climate and golden sand beaches.
There are no less than eight golf courses within a 30-minute drive, including the spectacular Las Colinas Golf & Country Club and La Finca Resort. You can of course play all year round.
In summer, the city also offers a wide range of water sports and activities and the fantastic Aquopolis Water Park is always a hit with families, along with the Delfin Submarine Museum.
There are also plenty of walking routes, including the popular 7km-long “Via Verde”, which takes you along the shores of the two spectacular salt lakes, Laguna Rosa and Laguna Salada La Mata.
Torrevieja is also home to a wide variety of shops, as well two great shopping centres – the famous La Zenia Boulevard in Orihuela Costa, which is just a 20-minute drive away, and the Habaneras Shopping Centre located in Torrevieja itself.
For those of you who are foodies, Torrevieja also has plenty to offer. Being on the coast means fresh fish and seafood are a big part of the local gastronomy, with “caldero”, a fish-based rice dish, being one of the stars. There is also a great restaurant scene in Torrevieja offering cuisine from all over the world and some superb nightlife options in and around the city’s marina.
Healthcare and schooling are of course of paramount importance as well if you are considering moving to Torrevieja to live all year round. Torrevieja caters very well for its international residents with three international schools within a 20-minute drive, the Quirón Private Hospital renowned for its incredibly short waiting time and plenty of doctors and dentists who offer their services in a variety of European languages as well as English.
As you can see, Torrevieja really is blessed, so the million-dollar question is: “Can I afford to buy a house in Torrevieja?” Surprisingly, property in Torrevieja is much cheaper than other destinations on the Costa Blanca.
You can buy a one-bedroom holiday apartment walking distance to the city centre beach called Playa del Cura for around €60,000 or a two-bedroom apartment for about €80,000, according to HomeEspaña property valuation manager Rob Lennick.
If you prefer to be a little bit out of the centre of the city, another nice area for apartments is Mar Azul, which lies to the south. “If you go back one or two streets from the frontline, called Millionaire’s Row, you can pick up apartments for €85,000 and you are only 100m or 200m from the beach”, he said.
