Can we can get the electric tile cutters in the suitcase?
Dave and Isabel completed the purchase of their villa on 28th March this year for €192,000, but actually reserved the property back in September 2024 before they had even seen it in person.
Imagine you are walking down a street in Spain looking for a place to eat and you see three restaurants next to each other. Which one do you choose? The answer on everyone’s lips is of course “whichever one is busiest”! If a restaurant is full of people, logic says it is probably a great place.
The same can apply to buying property in Spain. If a destination is popular, there is definitely a very good reason for it. So, let’s take a look at three hot destinations for buying property in Spain and why they are attracting so much interest from international buyers.
The old saying of “when in Rome do as the Romans do” fits the bill perfectly when referring to the stunning seaside town of Denia, conveniently located between the cities of Valencia, an hour to the north, and Alicante an hour to the south.
The town is one of the most popular summer destinations for Spanish tourists from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia and as such, has maintained a very authentic Spanish vibe, despite the now well consolidated presence of foreign residents from countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium.
And if the Spanish love Denia, what more of a guarantee do you need to consider buying a property here yourself? Denia has beautiful beaches, spectacular mountain scenery, a great Mediterranean climate and a fantastic food scene ranging from traditional tapas bars and restaurants around the castle in the old town to the modern Els Magazinos street food market towards the coast and the upmarket restaurants, chill-out and cocktail bars and night clubs by the marina.
Denia is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque locations in Spain, which means you really are getting something special when you purchase a property here. And if you compare prices to those in other similarly spectacular seaside towns in France and Italy and even Spain, your budget will definitely stretch a lot further in Denia.
The resale market in Denia has a lot to offer foreign buyers and prices remain highly competitive at just over €1,700 per square metre, compared to €2,800 per square metre in Marbella for example. Independent villas start at around €300,000 and two-bedroom apartments in the town itself can be found for as little as €150,000. And if you are looking for something really spectacular, Denia does luxury with a capital “L” in areas like Les Rotes and el Montgó with sea and mountain views.
There is also a good selection of new build properties, including Denia Village, a private, luxury residential complex located just 900m from the centre of the town.
Denia has a stable population of just under 50,000 inhabitants all year round and a whole host of services, including international schools, hospitals and La Sella Golf Resort, which makes it a desirable destination for anyone looking to move to Spain on a permanent basis as well.
Widely regarded the most popular tourist destination in the region of Murcia, Los Alcázares also tops the charts for international property buyers and it is easy to see why.
The name Los Alcázares means “Palaces” or “Noble Country Houses” in Arabic, referring to the luxury holiday homes built here by the Arabs in the 6th century. And holidaymakers have continued to flock to this former fishing village located on the shores of the Mar Menor to enjoy its seven kilometres of beaches, 320 days of sunshine a year and relaxing lifestyle.
Los Alcázares is also just a 30-minute drive from the Region of Murcia International Airport, which has flights to 10 different airports in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and only just over an hour away from Alicante International airport, making it very quick and easy to travel in and out.
So, the weather, location and also the services this coastal town boasts clearly make it a great place to buy, but is property still affordable? The answer is yes. Properties in Los Alcázares are still incredibly well priced and the market offers great value for money.
Los Narejos, just to the north of Los Alcázares, has one-bed apartments starting at €70,000 and two-bed apartments starting at €80,000, while townhouses start at €90,000.
Near the 525 Hotel in Los Alcázares and just 10 minutes’ walk to the beach, gated urbanisation El Divino is home to apartments starting at €115,000 while a penthouse in the Albatros Residencia in the same area is on the market for €160,000. Villas in the Lomas de Rame urbanisation to the south of Los Alcázares start at €200,000, but if you want to be closer to the beach, prices rise to around €350,000.
Last but not least, the new build market in Los Alcázares also has plenty to offer, with apartments starting at €180,000 and villas at €250,000.
The beautiful Mediterranean city of Valencia has been on everyone’s radar for some time now, largely thanks to international sporting events such as the America’s Cup and Formula 1. Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, but it is very easy to move around and has a much more laid-back vibe than Madrid or Barcelona, while still rivalling any large European city in terms of what it is has to offer.
The historical quarter of Valencia is one of the largest in Europe, while trendy neighbourhoods like the centrally located Russafa and El Cabanyal near the city’s urban beach called La Malvarrosa are great places for going out for food and drink. The modern City of Arts and Science has become one of the city’s postcard landmarks and the 9km-long River Turia Park provides plenty of green space for running and is home to a myriad of sporting activities including rugby, football, hockey, baseball and athletics.
While the fact that Valencia is a beacon for tourists, digital nomads and those of you who love city living is not exactly ground-breaking news, what may surprise you is the fast-growing market for independent villas within 30-40 minutes of the city.
Inland towns and villages such as Montserrat, Montroy, Turis and Alberic to the south of Valencia and Llira, Vilamarxant, Olocau, Pedralba and Estivella to the north service a whole host of residential urbanisations and rural villas that start at as little as €150,000. A small price to pay for three bedrooms, two bathrooms, 1000m2 of plot with a swimming pool and an outdoor summer kitchen and BBQ area.
The international communities in these areas have grown significantly over the past 10 years and the towns are increasingly well equipped to cater for their new residents, making this option even more attractive.
And with Valencia city, its international airport and the shores of the Mediterranean never more than 30-40 minutes away… Talk about the best of both worlds!
