Valencia Voted Best City for Expats in 2024 by InterNations
Valencia, Spain, has reclaimed its spot as the best city in the world for expatriates, according to the 2024 Expat City Ranking by InterNations.
Buying in the Costa Blanca has given Marie and Zoran Rynner the perfect bolt-hole for escaping Sweden’s chilly winters.
The couple, who are in their 60s and live in Gothenburg, completed the purchase of their apartment in Villamartín in mid-November 2019. They found the property during a viewing trip in September, when they made a successful offer of €129,000, leaving their lawyer to complete the purchase on their behalf.
“We went to Orihuela Costa on the recommendation of my cousin who has her own holiday home there,” said Marie. “She spotted a property for sale that she thought we would like, so we went to have a look and arranged to see a selection of other places too. Before then the only time I’d been to the Costa Blanca was when I visited Benidorm as a youngster. Two years ago we went to the Costa del Sol and looked at property, but didn’t buy.”
Initially Marie and Zoran, who have two adult children together and one grandchild, were interested only in townhouses. But after a few viewings they were put off by the amount of stairs and distribution of living space.
“So, we asked HomeEspaña to find us some ground-floor apartments,” continued Marie. “Kate there showed a selection but we couldn’t find anything we liked. By our last day we decided not to see any more, we wanted a day off. Luckily though HomeEspaña didn’t give up. They rang and asked us to look at just one more property, which they said was very nice. We agreed and sure enough, within 10 minutes of stepping inside we knew we wanted it. So we made our offer.”
The Rynners’ apartment had already been reduced from €135,000 to €129,995, so Marie asked the vendor to drop only slightly to €129,000, which was agreed.
“The property was in excellent condition and came fully furnished, including with all new appliances. Boasting two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open-plan kitchen and living room, we’re on a gated complex with a communal pool and garden area. We’re about four kilometres from the sea. HomeEspaña were really fantastic throughout, including after we’d made our offer. Katherine there has been amazing, helping us with everything and answering all our questions quickly.”
Thanks to good flight connections between Gothenburg and Alicante, reaching their apartment is easy for Marie and Zoran, who has two further children from a previous marriage. They plan to visit outside of high season and will let it to holidaymakers from June to mid-September.
Villamartín’s location and nearby attractions make it a popular community with both residents and holidaymakers.
“It’s so convenient for everything, including shopping, restaurants and the beach,” confirmed Marie. “But it’s still quiet and not too crowded or built up. Also, we find eating and drinking out much cheaper than in Sweden, which is always nice!”

Spain’s Congress approved a significant reform to expedite the eviction process for illegal occupants, commonly known as “okupas.” This legislative change aims to streamline legal proceedings, enabling property owners to reclaim their properties more swiftly.
