The Somerset couple began the search for a holiday home in January 2025. “David, who is 65, had cut back on his work as an MD in manufacturing and I was already retired from my HR manager role,” said Paula. “It was the right time in our lives. We reached a point where we have the flexibility to visit Spain when we want.”
After making contact with HomeEspaña, by March that year they had found and secured their perfect home in the northern Costa Blanca. They completed and got the keys in May and were back in July for a family holiday with their son and daughter, both in their early twenties, with a few of their friends in tow. David also has a son in his thirties.
The Lusks’ property is a five-bedroom, four-bathroom villa in the charming resort of Moraira. Built in a traditional style, with white walls and terracotta roof, highlights include a private pool, lots of outdoors spaces and a prime location.
“It’s ideal for outdoor living,” continued Paula. “There’s lots of space around the pool and there’s a covered outdoor kitchen and living area. And we love our bedroom’s private terrace, which we can retire to and watch over the pool from a safe distance when things get a bit lively! And the location couldn’t be better. We’re opposite vines and have views of the hills but still just a 7-minute walk from the beach and centre of Moraira.”
The villa had been advertised for €900,000 but the Lusks struck a deal around €800,000. The total cost to them was circa €850,000 with taxes and fees included. They knew they wanted the property after their first visit so went back two days later and made their offer.
The couple are grateful for all the support from HomeEspaña and especially their agent Clare Johnston. “Once we’d identified the northern Costa Blanca, Clare drove us up and down the coast looking for the right property,” said Paula.“Always professional, she really got to know us and what sort of property would work for us. There was never any pressure or awkwardness if we didn’t like something – we felt really comfortable in her company, which often isn’t the case with selling agents. Nothing was too much – she gave up her own family time on Sundays to be with us and took us for cocktails after a busy day of viewings!”

“After completion, HomeEspaña were brilliant too. Michelle in Aftersales helped with things like how the bins work, paying council tax and where to find a good garden centre!”
The couple were also pleased with the service they received from their currency exchange provider who helped transfer the required funds to Spain for completion. They’re equally complimentary of the local law firm that represented them throughout the transaction.
After a year of ownership, the Lusks are enjoying getting to know Moraira and the surrounding area. While they had been to Javea, they had never been to the resort before they found their property.
Set around a pretty bay, upmarket Moraira began life as a fishing village and thanks to controlled development retain lots of its original character. Overlooked by its historic fortress, most amenities are walkable from the main beach, including the marina and old town. The backdrop of the Sierra de Bernia mountains and pockets of vineyards add to its wow factor.

“It’s about 70 minutes to Alicante Airport, which makes long weekends perfectly feasible,” enthused Paula. “It’s easy to get the train into Valencia too. When we’re out there in July with the children and friends we like spending time round the pool, going to the beach, going out for cocktails, eating out, just enjoying the town. When it’s not so hot, we like walking and exploring more.”
Congratulations Paula and David, we’re so happy you found your dream home!
