From Tourist to Local – How to Feel at Home in Spain
You’ve fallen in love with Spain – the sunshine, the lifestyle, the charm of its towns and cities. But what happens when the holiday ends and real life begins?
UK couple Donna and Michael Cordingley say they were not definitely going to buy when they visited HomeEspaña in Valencia for the first time in August this year, “but when we saw the house, we just fell in love with it. It was everything we wanted!” Donna says. “We saw a couple of properties with HomeEspaña, but this was the one,” Donna added.
Retired teaching assistant Donna and her husband Michael, a self-employed carpenter, completed the purchase of their three-bedroom rustic villa in Montserrat (Valencia) on November 15th for €165,000 and moved in the same day.
“We are still just finding our feet and unpacking boxes,” Donna says.
With three bedrooms, there is enough space for family and friends to come and stay as well. The property also has a carport and a garage is only a 10-minute drive to the lively town of Montserrat, with its growing ex-pat community.
“It’s just perfect really. We were like, right, we’re going to put the deposit down and then we went home and sold our house! It was all so quick!”
The couple also contracted the services of a solicitor in Valencia and a company in Alicante to help them with their visa application, which only took them two weeks!
The couple from Eastbourne say retiring in Spain was always in the back of their mind. Donna had been caring for her father, but he passed away last year. And with their three children now grown up and with families of their own, they decided it was the right time.
“Mick’s mum lives in Spain, she lives in Murcia so it was always something that we thought, you know, we’d love to do it.”
The Cordingley’s first saw the property they ended up buying at an exhibition in London and then HomeEspaña contacted them to organise a viewing.
“Aaron reached out initially and then we dealt with Freddy who took us round to look at the properties and then Argemary did the rest of it. They’ve been absolutely fantastic with us” Donna says.
“We’ve been in a couple of times (to the HomeEspaña Office in Montserrat) and Freddy came over the day we moved in.”
The Cordingley’s now have some time to settle in, but as things happened so quickly, they won’t be having family over for Christmas. They had booked a cruise a year ago, so all we can say is congratulations on your purchase Donna and Mick… and bon voyage!
