Property in Mar Menor

One of the most desirable locations in Murcia is the stretch of villages on the famous Mar Menor. ‘Mar Menor’ means small, or lesser, sea and that is exactly what it is – a large, saltwater lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean ocean by La Manga – a 22-kilometre long sandbank. This unique geography creates what Esther Williams, an Olympic swimmer and Hollywood film star, called “the largest swimming pool in the world” – never more than 7 metres deep, with water that is on average 5 degrees warmer than the Med, it’ one of the most popular locations in Europe for water sports.

Los Alcazares is on the western shore of the Mar Menor, is an idyllic location, enjoying coastal and mountain views. Once a small fishing village, it is now an extremely popular coastal resort, particularly in the summer months. Long known for its ancient spas, you can walk along the promenade and enjoy the recently restored marina. The immediate countryside is mostly flat, so cycling and horse-riding are popular.

La Manga del Mar Menor is one of the most highly regarded resorts in the whole of Spain – and if you fancy a taste of a more jet-set lifestyle, then the prestigious La Manga Club is the place to be. With three championship golf courses, restaurants, beauty salons, gyms, shops and every water sport imaginable, from scuba diving to water skiing to catamaran sailing, this is where many international football teams do their winter training. Unsurprisingly the glitz and glamour of the resort can be reflected in property prices but, as a rule, Costa Calida and Murcia property prices tend to be cheaper than other popular areas of Spain like the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol.

When you’ re bored with celebrity spotting, you’ll find that the area around the Mar Menor has plenty more to keep you busy. The Costa Calida starts at El Mojon, a purpose-built urbanisation set on one of the most stunning Blue Flag beaches on this coastline – with safe bathing, wooden walkways on the beach, a children’ play area, and many excellent places to eat and drink. Close to El Mojon are some of the most ecologically important wetlands in the world, the Regional Park of Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, home to pink flamingos and a host of other wildlife. Another area of outstanding natural interest is the Calblanque Nature Reserve. Exploring the countryside around the Mar Menor will show you a region of contrasts – salt flats, hills, cliffs, stunning mountains – it’ the perfect location for keen walkers and hikers as well as beach lovers.
